BABY CHICKENS, Y'ALL:

We’re gearing up for the 2013 Chickam hatch scheduled for April 20th, 2013! Sometimes the hatch is early though, so start checking here 2 days beforehand. We placed eggs in our incubator on March 30th and have 15 healthy embryos! We’ll update here, on Twitter and at jackshenhouse.com with details and exact dates as they develop. We will occasionally put the cam out in the yard with the adult chickens throughout the year (weather permitting), sometimes aimed at the nest boxes. Live web broadcast of baby chickens hatching and growing up! See and hear them 24/7! We live in a suburban community of Gardnerville, Nevada where we keep a small flock for pets and eggs. Our chickens are of various breeds, including Giant Cochins, Salmon Faverolles, Americanas, Barred Rock, New Hampshire, Red Star, Easter Egger, White Leghorn, Brahmas, Belgian d’Uccle, Old English Game, Brinkotter, Orpington, Krainkoppe, Frizzle, Cochin, Bantam and Polish varieties. We usually have at least one hatching each spring and raise the chicks to adolescence before taking our pick of the litter and giving away the roosters and extra hens to good homes or to our local feed store, where they are sold at a price high enough to avoid them being bought as a food bird. Just for fun we also broadcast on Halloween night as we dress up and scare people. :)

There are sinkholes on the South side, geysers erupting from storm drains on the North and northwest sides, and water shutting down expressways. We’ve put together a handful of photos gathered via social media of what commuters and homeowners are dealing with this morning.

Continue to ignore our failing infrastructure though, politicians. it’s cool. we’ll just feed poor people to the sink holes in hopes of appeasing them.

No one told me Chicago was drowning. What the fuck.

I drove by a parking lot with scuba divers in it (chest deep in water) on my way to work today! “Chicago is drowning” may be an accurate statement.

Taronga Zoo has enjoyed recent success breeding Indian Star Tortoises. The zoo’s collection includes five adults, a four-year-old, and a one-year-old, in addition to these two new babies.

Indian Star Tortoises are named for the striking black markings on their high domed shells. Highly sought after for the exotic pet trade, populations of these Tortoises are declining in their native India and Sri Lanka. Because Indian Star Tortoises have low reproduction rates, the Taronga Zoo’s breeding program is important to the captive population.

This is the kind of chemistry experiment that saves millions of lives.

Back in 1976 Brookhaven scientists synthesized the first successful radiotracer - called ¹⁸FDG - for positron emission tomography (PET) imaging. In this photo, chemist Joanna Fowler is working with an early synthesis apparatus that created the radiotracer, which is still the same compound used world-wide for brain research and cancer diagnosis.

This morning, the New York Section of the American Chemical Society is designating Brookhaven’s Chemistry Building as a Historical Chemical Landmark (a lot of capital letters, we know) for blazing that radiotracer trail.

Curious about how this breakthrough compound works its magic? When injected, ¹⁸FDG (fluorodeoxyglucose) serves as a stand-in for glucose, the body’s main source of energy. While traveling through sugar-hungry tissue, the short-lived radioactive isotope of fluorine - that’s the ¹⁸F - emits particles called positrons (antimatter electrons!), which interact with the body’s electrons and send off energetic back-to-back gamma rays. Those signals, picked up by a PET scanner, produce maps of metabolic activity in the brain and body.

The Clear Science Staff just can’t get over this glassware setup. (We like that kind of thing quite a bit ohhh boy.) Long time readers may remember our series on antimatter, in which we discussed how the PET scan works. We had no idea FDG was first made at Brookhaven National Lab!
